That was my first reaction too. But, I also get that sadly we're still at a place in this country's evolution where visibility is important for the ongoing struggle for equality. I thought this article made the point well:
We'll get there when all the self-hating Republican congressmen are able to admit that they are gay. Mark Foley anyone? The stigma against homosexuality is clearly based in religious doctrine in the U.S. and until that goes away, this type of admission will always be counted as important.
