Steve Coogan, how can you be so funny?

Steve Coogan has deserved more appreciation here for a long while.  Coogan has had a long career in television and film, with small parts in American movies such as Night at the Museum and Tropic Thunder, and leading roles in 24 Hour Party People and Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story.  His most well-known character in Europe is boorish, clueless BBC radio and TV announcer Alan Partridge (below); I have read that an Alan Partridge movie is in the works.

Recently, Coogan costarred in The Trip, which contains a priceless scene of duelling Michael Caine impressions.  This post is as much a reminder to myself to add all the BBC videos to our Netflix queue.

Fans of British comedy (Monty Python, Peter Cook, Peter Sellers, etc.) will not be disappointed.

Steve Coogan is my number one comedy crush right now. He is nothing short of a treasure. Karl and I watched the Trip a couple months back and it did not disappoint. Much different than we thought it would be it was a wonderful film.

So glad to hear you're a fan, Stephanie! (and somehow not surprised...) Yes, right after watching this Michael Caine smackdown, I put The Trip at the top of our Netflix queue :) I think you would like 24 Hour Party People too. Quite demented and hilarious. It's about Tony Wilson & Factory Records - the '80s music scene in Manchester (Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, et al.)

And don't forget the painfully comedic hamlet ii. Overstated in the classic British farcical style that the American public never seems to get.

Haven't seen it but I will - thanks for the recommendation, Pete.

Loved! The Trip!
and... btw ... did you ever see "Four Lions"? British movie about some would-be bumbling terrorists ... utterly caustic satire.
