food: hey ALDI, whither the rice cakes?

To the litany of ALDI raves, today I reluctantly add a mini-rant.

I'm frightened and angry.  OK, not really, but I am more than a little peeved.

So:  ALDI sells rice cakes.  They come in two flavors:  Lightly Salted, which is a funny joke because actually they have no salt at all, like literally 10 mg/cake; and Caramel Corn, which we never buy because then we'd eat 500 cakes per week instead of only a few dozen.

Oh - and at about $1.39 for a bag, they are, as usual, less than half the price you'd pay at Jewel.

So there we are, the kids and I, happily plowing through 40 or so rice cakes a week between the five of us.  We enjoy them in the following ways:
--Cottage cheese, freshly ground pepper, & dill;
--Peanut butter w/thin slices of apple or banana;
--Peanut butter with just a wee dusting of sugar, tapped off in the sink.  The house favorite
--Toasted (great) with a tiny bit of butter;
--When no one's looking, spread with gross leftover Duncan Hines frosting and quickly gobbled before anyone comes in.

I literally buy them 8 bags at a time every few weeks.  I walk out of there looking like an octopus.

But then one day...they're not there.  I think, "no biggie, they probably just haven't put them out.  Oh hey, here are those little mini rice-cake thingies, white cheddar and what-have-you."  I don't want those:  they're more expensive and you can't top them with anything, plus they have more fat and calories.  I hold my panic in check.

But then, they aren't in two other ALDI stores either.   Now I'm panicking a little bit.  What will we do?  Where else am I going to get a salt-free, whole-grain, 35-calorie thing that our kids can attack when they get home from school?  We already eat carrots & stuff.  I'm talking about something crunchy that won't wreck their dinners.  And there's no way I'm paying $2.50 for what amounts to 25 grains of rice and some air.

I miss my little peanut butter/sugar rice cake.  D:

Rice Cake Alert: Dear friend Jenny G passed along a link to Lundberg Farms' rice cakes, from the healthy organic vegan end of the spectrum. I found them at Jewel this morning, purchased the Organic Brown Rice with Tamari and Seaweed, and discovered how amazing they are. Twice as much rice as normal rice cakes, so they're denser. 50 cents off at Jewel. So this is a real conundrum: how can I hate Jewel if they have these wonderful rice cakes, on sale, no less? http://www.amazon.com/Lundberg-Organic-Tamari-Seaweed-8-5-Ounce/dp/B000FVWJ7Q
