My favorite part of every Popeye cartoon is wondering what the beaten-up party will transform into upon landing, after Popeye sends them skyward with his giant pinwheeling forearms: Bluto coming down as a merry-go-round, etc. Sure, it's violent, but way more creatively violent than the Three Stooges.

Animation: Who Needs LSD When You Have Popeye?
The Fleischer Brothers turned out some of the most innovative animation there is back in the 1930s; "Shiver Me Timbers" is a classic example, appropriate for this Halloween time of year. It's rather hard cheese on poor Olive - I do wish Popeye would have apologized for his mistake - but you have to admire the creativity and looniness of their work.
